Hate Speech, Racism, and Discrimination in Norway (HARDISK)

The project aims to provide insight into racism and discrimination across various areas of Norwegian public life.

Project period September 2024–December 2026
Project employer Bufdir
Project nr. 10809
Project leaders Julia Orupabo, Marjan Nadim

The project has a threefold purpose: First, to provide knowledge about how racism and discrimination based on visible differences, such as skin color, clothing, and religious symbols, manifest and shape the experiences and opportunities of minorities in Norwegian society. Second, to offer knowledge about ethnic diversity and the extent of racism and discrimination in volunteer work and the arts and cultural life in Norway. Third, to provide insights into how artificial intelligence (AI) can identify and prevent hate speech in social media.

By utilizing a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data sources, the project aims to give an overview of the extent, experiences, and driving forces behind racism, hate, and discrimination in a Norwegian context, as well as how counterforces, such as collective mobilization, everyday resistance, inclusion efforts, and AI as a tool, can potentially help counteract and prevent racism and hate in Norwegian society.

The project studies both the sender and receiver sides of racism and discrimination. The design is closely interconnected, illuminating the same questions and processes through different methodological approaches and across various groups in the population. Together, the data provide us with knowledge about both the extent (register data, survey data, and AI-generated analysis) and the processes that create exclusion and inclusion (historical analysis, qualitative interviews, experiments, and survey data).

The project is a collaboration with Analyse og tall and the Jewish Museum in Oslo.
