Sociologist researching identity, inequality, and discrimination
Julia Orupabo received her PhD in Sociology in 2014. She studies various forms of social differentiation, with a particular focus on recognition, identity, and the mechanisms that create inclusion and exclusion. Orupabo leads several major projects aimed at generating systematic knowledge about discrimination and ethnic inequality in Norwegian society.
Orupabo has extensive experience with a range of qualitative methods, including both interviews and ethnography, and she often explores the intersection of ethnicity, gender, and class. Her research has been published in leading journals and received the Norwegian Sociological Association’s award for best English-language article (2020).
Orupabo also has broad editorial experience and is a member of the editorial board of Sociology. She has previously been associate editor of different Norwegian journals. Orupabo is an active communicator of research to the public and was appointed by the Ministry of Education and Research as a member of the Committee for Gender Balance and Diversity in Research (KIF) for two terms (2018–2025).
