The Norwegian Integration Barometer

Norwegian’s attitudes on immigration and integration.

Project period 2017–2028
Project nr. 10254 / 10375 / 10704 / 10689
Project leader Jan-Paul Brekke

What do people believe is required to be considered Norwegian? Who is responsible for successful integration? Is it acceptable to wear a hijab in the workplace? What can help explain these attitudes, and how do they change over time? The Integration Barometer provides answers to these questions.

The barometer goes back to 2005, and since 2017 the Institute for Social Research, commissioned by IMDi (the Directorate of Integration and Diversity), has further developed the barometer. Every other year, the findings are presented as a report based on a nationally representative survey of around 3,000 respondents.

Supplementary survey – The impact of the war in Ukraine

The Institute for Social Research has monitored developments in attitudes toward receiving refugees in Norway since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This supplementary survey reflects the increased support within the Norwegian population in the period after the invasion, and a return to normal levels in autumn 2023.

Integration Barometer 2022

In the 2022 Integration Barometer, we take a closer look at attitudes toward various types of immigration (refuge, asylum, labor, family); we examine the effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on attitudes toward receiving refugees, views on high COVID‑19 infection rates in parts of the immigrant population, and attitudes toward religious groups.

Supplementary analysis for the Integration Barometer 2022

How have public attitudes toward immigration and integration changed after Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, followed by a record influx of refugees to Norway? To answer this, key questions from the Integration Barometer were repeated in three population‑representative surveys conducted in March, June, and October 2022:
