Background
As part of the first Hopkins survey, a mapping of local branches in Hordaland was conducted in 1998. This county was a natural choice since similar surveys were conducted in 1980 and 1990, allowing for analysis of changes in the organisational community. In 2009, a new mapping of local branches in all municipalities in Hordaland was conducted, and in 2013, 2018, and 2023, surveys of national organisations were carried out. There is now a need to update the data foundation for both local and national organisations. At the local level, the project will conduct a sample survey where non-responding organisations are replaced with a supplementary sample. The survey will have a core module of questions for all organisations and a tailored module per organisation type to highlight sectoral characteristics and challenges. The project covers various types of organisations, including culture, hobby and leisure, sports, children and youth organisations, organisations with a large proportion of immigrants, membership-based education, health and social organisations, non-profit welfare actors, housing and local community, and faith and belief.
Project Approach
The project will conduct new data collections in 2027 for both local and national organisations. The questions to be answered include:
- What changes are occurring in organisational population and organisational form at local, regional, and national levels?
- Which societal spheres are the organisations targeting, and what is their scope in terms of membership, employees, and economy?
- How do organisations use digital platforms and social media, and what is their contact with public authorities?
- What is the extent and distribution of the organisations' costs and income, as well as access to premises?
The survey will provide an updated overview of the organisational landscape and form the basis for other projects. The data will be analysed to present a descriptive overview of the findings and analyse changes over time.
The project will culminate in a report to be delivered in 2028. The report will present a descriptive overview of the findings from the surveys and analyse changes over time.
