Public Attitudes towards the Sámi

What are the attitudes of the Norwegian majority population towards the Sámi people, and how can these be measured systematically over time? In this project, we develop a set of survey questions to systematically measure attitudes towards the Sámi and analyse data from a nationwide survey in which these questions are used.

Project period June 2026–September 2027
Project nr. 10971
Project leader Jo Saglie

The survey questions cover the content of attitudes towards the Sámi (including prejudices and positive as well as negative stereotypes), the underlying drivers (such as perceived conflict and predispositions), and potential countervailing factors that might mitigate stereotypes. Furthermore, we measure background factors that may influence these aspects – geography, in particular.

Such a framework enables us to explain variations in attitudes within the population and to identify causal mechanisms that can be addressed through policies and measures.

This set of questions is being used in a nationwide online survey, which also includes open-ended questions and survey experiments. The results will be published in a report.
