This project is part of CORE – Centre for Research on Gender Equality.
In recent years, the public debate about the challenges boys and men face in today’s society has resurfaced and received increased attention. The aim of this project is to get an overview of the central research contributions in this field, and to analyse available survey and register data. As educational trajectories are considered to be crucial for subsequent life choices and living conditions, we limit our focus to gender equality challenges in the education system. We focus on regional differences, and intersectional inequality, i.e. the relationship between gender, social background and immigration background, with a particular focus on men.
From our review of previous research, the project aims to answer the following questions:
- What does previous Norwegian and International research say about equality challenges among boys and men in the education system?
- What does the research say about the causes and consequences of these challenges in the short and long term?
- What do we know about regional variation in gender differences in grades, educational choices, and level of education, as well as variation according to social background and immigration background in the Norwegian context?
The project will also involve new empirical analyses based on register data from Statistics Norway, as well as data from the Gender Equality Barometer 2022 (carried out by CORE Centre for Research on Gender Equality). In the empirical analyses, we will, among other things, examine attitudes towards boys' and men's gender roles and equality challenges, and regional variation in gender differences in education.
