Karl Henrik Sivesind

Sosiologist conducting research on volunteering, voluntary organizations, and nonprofit welfare providers

Karl Henrik Sivesind is a research professor at the Institute for Social Research, Oslo, Norway (2004– ), and Dr. polit. in Sociology from the University of Oslo (1997). He is currently leading projects about the internal democracy in voluntary organizations and donations and social inequality. He has been leader for EU project work packages, such as: ‘Elaboration and Testing of Impact Indicators’ on the project ‘Third Sector Impact—The Contribution of the Third Sector to Europe’s Socio-economic Development’ funded by the EU’s 7th Framework Programme (2014–2017). He has also taken part in public investigations, including an expert committee on economic transfers from the state to voluntary organizations (2018).

Norway in international comparison

Sivesind has been involved in several comparative research projects. He was leader of the project ‘Conditions and Impacts of Welfare Mix’ funded by the Norwegian Research Council (2015-2020). He headed a team of Scandinavian scholars, which analysed the considerable variation in the shares of nonprofit and for-profit services in education, health and social services, and contributed to the book «Promoting Active Citizenship. Markets and Choice in Scandinavian Welfare» (edited with Jo Saglie and published by Palgrave in 2017). He has also studied changes affecting civil society by analysing population surveys and organization data as a part of the activities of the Johns Hopkins Non-profit Sector Project (2000–2007) and the Centre for Research on Civil Society and Voluntary Sector in Oslo/Bergen (2008–2023).
