The project investigates how gendered life experiences across the life course affect political trust, democratic participation, and support for the welfare state. It focuses on a broad set of experiences related to education, public services, family life, care work, childlessness, divorce, and health. The project studies both women’s and men’s gendered life experiences and grievances.
A central question is the role played by Norway’s high level of institutional trust. Can trust in politics, welfare policies, and public services cushion the political consequences of gendered life experiences, or can such experiences contribute to weakening trust among some groups?
To answer these questions, STRUGGLE combines longitudinal surveys, survey experiments, registry data, sibling designs, and comparative analyses across countries. The aim is to provide new knowledge about how gendered life experiences shape political trust, democratic participation, and support for the welfare state.
