When people go missing, voluntary organizations are involved in search and rescue operations. To mobilize enough rescue personnel, public authorities are dependent on the contribution from voluntary organization for their search and rescue teams. There is little knowledge about how the different actors involved in search and rescue are coordinated, about their respective roles and the extent of their contribution.
To start filling this knowledge gap we will therefore in this project examine the following questions:
- To what extent and how do public authorities make use of volunteers?
- What types of organizations are frequently used?
- How does the coordination and interaction between voluntary organizations, the police and other public authorities work?
- What motivates people to volunteer for the search- and rescue service?
The project has a qualitative design. We will carry out interviews with the police and representatives from selected associations who organize under the umbrella organization Rescue Academic Forum (FORF).
