Changing organizational landscape (2023-24)

Project period 2023–2024
Project nr. 10457.18
Project leader Bernard Enjolras

As part of the first Hopkins survey that ISF and the LOS center (later the Uni Rokkansenteret) collaborated on, a survey of local teams in Hordaland was carried out in 1998. This county was a natural choice since similar surveys were carried out in 1980 and 1990, and this gave opportunities to analyze changes in the organizational community. In 2009, a new survey of local teams was carried out in all municipalities in Hordaland. In addition, a random stratified sample of municipalities was drawn which was also mapped and in 2013 and 2018 a survey of national organisations.

There is a need to update the database when it comes to both local and national organisations. At the local level, the project will carry out a sample survey where organizations that do not respond will be replaced from an additional sample. In these surveys, we will be able to have a core module of questions for all organisations, as well as an adapted module per type of organisation, which will be able to better illuminate the sectoral characteristics and challenges. This survey will contribute with an updated overview of the organizational landscape and will form the basis for other projects.

This project will thus involve new data collections when it comes to both local and national organisations. The project will have a sectoral focus with special modules for certain types of organizations (e.g. culture, hobby and leisure; sports; children's and youth organisations; organizations with a large proportion of immigrants; member-based education, health and social organizations and other community-oriented organisations; non-profit welfare actors ; housing and local environment; faith and outlook on life).

The question to be answered in this survey is what changes are taking place in the organizational population and organizational form at local, regional and national level, which spheres of society the organizations primarily target, and their scope in terms of membership, employees and finances, use of digital platforms and social media, as well as contact with public authorities.
