Cultural institutions and volunteerism I

Project period 2018–2019
Project employer Kulturdepartementet
Project leader Dag Wollebæk

Background for the project

Internet and the use of digital tools in institutions has changed the frames and possibilities for volunteerism (e.g. Lokalhistoriewiki, Wikipedia, registration of archive material/photos, transcripts, etc.). In this relation, there is a need to develop knowledge on the relationship between cultural institutions (museums, archives, libraries) and their collaboration with voluntary organizations and volunteers. More knowledge on what cultural institutions do to engage volunteer labor will create a fundament for new initiatives that aim to achieve the potential that volunteer effort is to cultural institutions.

Project Aim

The project mapped and described the extent of voluntary work in public/publically financed culture institutions:

  • What type of voluntary work is applied?
  • What types of organizations are included in collaborations?
  • What financial, disciplinary, and other values does the collaboration create for the institution?
  • On the other hand; what does it coast the institutions to facilitate, organize and follow-up on the volunteers?
