The Aubert lecture has been held annually since 1991. From 1996, the lecture has consisted of a seminar at the Institute for Social Research's premises in Munthes gate and an open lecture at the University of Oslo.
The purpose has been to celebrate outstanding sociology and social analysis and in this way mark the legacy of the doyen of Norwegian sociology, sociologist and jurist Vilhelm Aubert (1922–1988).
