Through ethnographic digital observation and qualitative interviews, the ALARMED CITIZENS project will provide new knowledge about media use, information environment, and public engagement among groups in Norway who are characterized by: 1) strong mistrust in traditional media, authorities, and expertise, 2) a shared perception that society is facing dramatic threats, and 3) experiencing that the threat is not taken seriously and expressing concerns carries social risks. The project particularly explores environments marked by criticism of traditional medicine and vaccines, skepticism towards climate and energy policies, and criticism of global elites and supranational organizations.
The project aims to gain insights into how the ideal of a public information infrastructure based on inclusive media diversity holds up and provide crucial knowledge for preserving an inclusive democracy and a shared critical public sphere
