Ines Wagner har en dobbel PhD-grad i statsvitenskap og økonomi og administrasjon. Forskningen hennes befinner seg i skjæringspunktet mellom arbeidsinnvandring, transnasjonalisme, integrering i EU og den politiske økonomiens skiftende natur.

Wagners forskning er publisert i flere internasjonale tidsskrifter med høy impact factor, og har mottatt priser fra Society for Advancement of Socio-Economics og Society for Advancement of Socio-Economics.
