Consequences of revocation of residence permits

Project period August 2018–April 2019
Project employer The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration
Project nr. 10337
Project leader Jan-Paul Brekke

Project Background

Revocation and cessation of residence permits and citizenship have increased in recent years. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration’s (UDI) revocation practice presumably has negative consequences both for persons who are subject to revocation, and their social surroundings.

Project Aim

The aim of this project is to shed light on the consequences of this practice. The project consists of two parts. First, we will study what happens with persons who lose their permits, based on register data from UDI. Second, we will illuminate how the persons who are affected experience the revocation practice. In this part, we will interview persons directly affected (recipients of warnings or revocation), persons indirectly affected (as family or part of the same target group) and representatives for immigrant groups that are particularly targeted.

Organization and Progress

Institute for Social Research is leading the project, and jointly conducting it with PRIO. The project is financed by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, and will result in a report in English, to be published in April 2019.
