Sociologist specializing in elites, democratic processes and institutional change
Fredrik Engelstad was Institute Director at the Institute for Social Research 1986-2007, and subsequently holds an adjoint position at the ISR. He was trained as a sociologist, and his research has focused on labor markets, organization, power and democracy, as well as sociology of culture and sociological theory.
Engelstad is series editor of the yearbook series Comparative Social Research, and has held a series of academic and political positions – among them as a member of the core group of the national Power and Democracy Study (1998-2003). His recent research at the institute includes studies of elites, gender quotas, and institutional change.
