Labour market and policy contexts: Comparing across sectors
How distinct is the research sector from the rest of the labour market? In which ways does academia differ from the rest of the labour market with regard to gender segregation and career outcomes?
Project period: 2017 - 2020
Project employer: NordForsk
Project leader: Liza Reisel
This work package is a part of NORDICORE – Nordic Centre for Research on Gender Equality in Research and Innovation.
This is NORDICORE's final work package, which will analyse the main conclusions of NORDICORE's other work packages. This crosscutting subproject aims to initiate comparative studies along three main dimensions.
- Across the various NORDICORE subprojects
- Between research organizations and other sectors of the labour market
- Across countries – in the Nordic region and beyond
Across the various NORDICORE subprojects
Studies of gender gaps within research have tended to place particular emphasis on the distinctive nature of academia. A major strength of NORDICORE is our thorough knowledge about the so-called Nordic gender equality paradox – and gender segregation (vertical and horizontal) – in the labour market in general. In this comparative and synthesizing project we will analyse our main conclusions from NORDICORES's other projects in light of existing knowledge about the mechanisms producing, maintaining and changing gender segregation in different parts of the Nordic labour markets.
Research organizations and other sectors of the labour market
We will investigate the distinctiveness of the research sector, as well as conditions for change within academia through comparing top-managers within ten sectors of society, of which the research sector is one. Comparisons with the business sector will be particularly central, in light of the low share of women among top executives and in the business sector elite.
Nordic variation – and beyond
Finally, we will explore the significance of national differences within the Nordic countries, and encourage studies that go beyond the region. Based on the results from NORDICORE's other projects we will ask how differences in research policy and how research is institutionalized in the different countries contribute to explaining Nordic variation in the progress towards gender equality. We will also relate these findings to variations in gender equality cultures as documented in macro studies of the institutionalization of gender equality policies.
