Volunteering

How, why and to what extent do people do voluntary work? At the centre we analyze the level and scope of voluntary work in Norway, as well as the key characteristics of the voluntary participants.

The voluntary sector in Norway is characterized by both stability and change. The level of participation, as well as the time spent on volunteering, remains high compared to other countries. At the same time, fewer people are members of the organizations for which they do their voluntary work . At the centre we map the level and scope of voluntary work in Norway, as well as the key characteristics of the voluntary participants. We also analyze the conditions for voluntary work, asking:

  • How does broad social change affect the conditions for volunteering?
  • What are the most important explanations for why people volunteer and participate?
  • To what extent is there an untapped potential for increased volunteer participation?
