Situation testing as a method for investigating ethnic discrimination
The purpose of this project is to consider situation testing as a method for investigating discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity in the Norwegian labour market. Situation testing involves the use of fake applications and actors to explore the occurrence of discrimination in the hiring process. The semi-experimental design makes it possible to measure what employers actually do in practice.
Despite the fact that situation testing is used in Sweden and Denmark, and in several other European countries, the method has never been applied in Norway. This is due to the lack of informed consent which the method implicates. An important part of the project is therefore to consider the ethical challenges involved, and to have the project considered by The National Committee for Research Ethics in the Social Sciences and the Humanities (NESH).
